Carex Feather Falls
Carex Feather Falls. A highly decorative form of carex that makes an excellent feature when mass planted or when grown in containers. May also be used in borders and for edging. Has arching, variegated foliage with beautiful feathery plumes that begin to emerge during spring. They are ideal for growing in coastal locations in either full sun or partial shade. Low maintenance and tolerates periods of drought.
Trimming: Carex ‘Feather Falls’ needs very little pruning. In early spring, comb through or lightly cut back tired, brown or damaged foliage to keep the clump neat. Trim off any scorched leaf tips as needed.
Fertilising: Feed lightly in spring if growth is weak, using a balanced slow-release fertiliser. Avoid overfeeding, as excessive fertiliser can make growth soft or untidy.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Carex ‘Feather Falls’ is quite adaptable, but it performs best with moisture in prolonged dry periods and should not be left waterlogged. Container plants will usually need more frequent watering.
Pest control: This carex is generally low maintenance and often pest-free, but occasionally aphids, mealybugs or slugs may appear. Check foliage for chewing, sticky residue or visible insects, and treat with insecticidal soap or hand removal where needed.
Disease management: Disease problems are uncommon, but rust and crown or root rot can occur, especially in overly wet conditions. Watch for orange-brown pustules, yellowing, collapse at the base, or general decline. Remove affected foliage and improve drainage to help prevent further issues.
