Beaucarnea recurvata

Beaucarnea recurvata, commonly known as Ponytail Palm, is a striking, slow-growing evergreen with a swollen, bottle-shaped base that stores water, making it exceptionally drought tolerant. Its long, arching, strap-like leaves cascade from the top, giving it a distinctive fountain-like form. Despite its common name, it is not a true palm but adds similar architectural interest to the garden.

Perfect for arid, contemporary, and tropical garden styles, it also thrives in large containers and makes an excellent low-maintenance feature for patios or indoor spaces.

Prefers full sun to light shade and thrives in free-draining soil with low to moderate moisture. Avoid overwatering and plant in a well-ventilated, dry position. Space well away from other plants to highlight its unique form.

Mature size: Grows slowly to around 2–3 metres high and 1–1.5 metres wide when grown outdoors.

Trimming: Minimal trimming required. Remove any brown or dried leaf tips with clean scissors, cutting just above the healthy tissue. Dead or damaged leaves can be removed at the base as needed.

Deadheading: Not applicable, as it rarely flowers indoors and is primarily grown for its ornamental foliage.

Fertilising: Feed sparingly with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 6–8 weeks during the active growing season (spring to early autumn). Do not fertilise in winter when growth slows.

Watering: Water sparingly—allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During establishment, ensure thorough but infrequent watering. Overwatering is a common issue and can lead to root rot.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, but check for mealybugs or spider mites, especially in dry indoor environments. Wipe affected areas with a damp cloth or treat with insecticidal soap if needed.

Disease Management: Low susceptibility to disease. Overwatering is the primary concern—ensure excellent drainage and avoid letting the base sit in water. Watch for soft or blackened stems, a sign of rot, and remove affected areas promptly.
