Bambusa Wang Tsai

Bambusa multiplex Wang Tsai is a compact, clump-forming bamboo known for its vibrant green culms and dense, bushy foliage. With its upright growth and tidy form, this non-invasive variety is ideal for smaller gardens, containers, or low hedging where a tropical feel and year-round structure are desired. Its lush appearance and adaptability make it a practical and attractive landscaping choice.

Perfect for tropical, Asian-inspired, and contemporary garden designs, it also suits screening, borders, or patio planters where height is needed without excessive spread.

Performs best in full sun to part shade in well-drained, fertile soil. Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry weather. Plant approximately 1 metre apart for a compact hedge or screen.

Mature size: Reaches 3–4 metres tall with a dense clumping spread of 1–1.5 metres.

Trimming: Prune annually in late winter or early spring to remove any dead, damaged, or overcrowded culms. Light thinning maintains a neat clump and allows the striking green canes to show. Lower branches can be trimmed to enhance the plant’s ornamental form.

Deadheading: Not applicable, as this bamboo does not flower ornamentally.

Fertilising: Apply a nitrogen-rich fertiliser in early spring to promote strong growth and vibrant foliage. A second feed in mid-summer may benefit plants grown in pots or poor soils. Organic mulch will help retain moisture and improve soil health.

Watering: Requires regular watering during establishment. Once settled, it is moderately drought-tolerant but prefers consistent moisture during hot or windy periods. Ensure good drainage—avoid waterlogged conditions.

Pest Control: Typically pest-resistant, though occasional issues with scale or spider mites may arise. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Minimal disease concerns. To avoid root rot or fungal issues, ensure good airflow and well-draining soil. Remove dead culms and debris promptly to maintain plant health.
