Bambusa multiplex Alphonse Karr is a striking, non-invasive clumping bamboo known for its vibrant golden-yellow culms striped with green, which develop attractive pinkish tones when exposed to sunlight. Its upright yet graceful habit and dense foliage make it ideal for creating a fast-growing screen, windbreak, or living wall. The colourful canes and lush green leaves offer year-round interest and movement.

A perfect addition to tropical, contemporary, Asian-inspired, or privacy-focused garden designs, it provides both structure and colour without the spreading concerns of running bamboo varieties.

Thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture. Water regularly during dry periods, especially when newly planted. Space clumps approximately 1–1.5 metres apart for dense screening.

Mature size: Typically reaches 4–6 metres in height with a clump spread of around 1–2 metres.

Trimming: Prune in late winter to remove dead or weak culms and to thin out overcrowded growth. For a tidy, ornamental appearance, remove lower leaves and branches to expose the attractive yellow-green canes with pinkish striations.

Deadheading: Not applicable, as this bamboo does not produce notable flowers.

Fertilising: Apply a high-nitrogen fertiliser in early spring to promote vigorous growth, with a second application in mid-summer if desired. Organic mulch can also help improve soil quality over time.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture, especially in dry or windy conditions. Avoid waterlogging.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free, but occasionally susceptible to scale insects or spider mites. Rinse foliage with water or use horticultural oil to control infestations.

Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Ensure good airflow and avoid overly damp conditions to prevent fungal issues such as sooty mould or root rot. Maintain healthy spacing and remove any dead material promptly.
