Rhubarb Glaskins Perpetual
Rhubarb Glaskins Perpetual is a reliable, easy-to-grow variety known for its extended harvesting season and low oxalic acid content, allowing for later picking without compromising flavour. When started in heat in late Winter, it can be harvested lightly the following year. Its large, juicy stems are excellent for tarts, pies, jams, and even winemaking.
This productive garden variety may produce a range of stem colours in seedlings—from green to pink to red—adding diversity to the crop. Best suited to vegetable gardens, edible borders, and cottage-style plantings. Plant in full sun in rich, moist, free-draining soil. Keep well-watered during dry spells and mulch annually. Avoid heavy harvests in the first year to allow the crown to establish.
Mature Size (H x W): 60 cm x 90 cm
Trimming: Remove any flower stalks as they appear to direct energy into leaf and stalk production. Cut away dead or yellowing leaves to keep the plant tidy and healthy.
Deadheading: Not applicable, as the flowers should be removed before they develop.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a rich, organic fertiliser or well-rotted compost. A mid-season top-up will support continued stalk production.
Watering: Water regularly during dry spells, especially in summer, to keep stalks tender and juicy. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Pest Control: Watch for slugs and snails, which may target young shoots. Use slug bait or traps as needed.
Disease Management: Crown rot can occur in poorly drained soils—ensure good drainage and avoid waterlogging. Remove any rotting plant material promptly and avoid harvesting in the first year to allow plants to establish.
