Plum Hawera
Notify MePlum Hawera is a productive deciduous plum grown for its sweet, flavoursome fruit and reliable cropping. In spring it produces masses of white flowers along the branches, followed by developing fruit that ripens in summer. With its attractive seasonal growth and manageable form, it’s a great choice for home orchards and backyard planting.
Perfect for edible, cottage, or lifestyle garden styles, Hawera grows best in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil that holds moisture through the warmer months. Water deeply during dry spells, especially while fruit is forming, and mulch to help keep roots cool and soil evenly moist. Space trees 3-4 m apart, and include a suitable pollinator plum nearby if required for best fruit set.
Mature size: Reaches around 3-4 m in height and 3-4 m in width, forming a rounded, productive fruit tree.
Trimming: Prune in late summer after fruiting to maintain an open structure, improve airflow, and allow sunlight into the canopy. Remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches and shorten vigorous upright shoots to encourage fruiting wood.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring as new growth begins. A second application in early summer may be beneficial in poor soils or for heavy cropping trees.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment, flowering, and fruit development. Once established, deep watering during extended dry spells supports healthy fruiting. Avoid waterlogging by ensuring good drainage.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, leafrollers, and scale. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil. Netting may be needed to protect ripening fruit from birds.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow to reduce the risk of fungal diseases like brown rot and silver leaf. Prune in dry weather to avoid infection, and remove fallen fruit and diseased wood promptly. Use well-drained soil to prevent root issues.
