Pyrus communis Keifer is a vigorous, deciduous pear tree known for its hardiness and reliability. Producing medium to large golden-green fruit with firm, slightly gritty flesh, it offers mild sweetness suited to fresh eating, preserving, and cooking. Ripening late in the season, the fruit is notable for its excellent storage life and strong resistance to bruising and handling damage.
Highly valued for its disease resilience, Keifer is almost immune to fireblight, making it a sound choice for organic or low-maintenance growing. While partially self-fertile, it performs best with a compatible pollinator nearby. Suitable for orchards or large edible gardens, it prefers full sun and well-drained soil, and tolerates a range of conditions. Reaches around 6-9 metres tall and 4-6 metres wide, forming a vigorous, rounded tree.
What is a bare-rooted tree?
Bare-rooted trees are deciduous trees that have been grown in the ground and are dug up when they've become dormant in the winter. The soil is shaken from their roots and they are bundled up with their roots packed in moist material to prevent dehydration during transport.
What are the benefits?
Trimming: Prune in Winter to maintain an open shape and promote fruiting. Remove any dead, damaged, or congested branches.
Fertilising: Feed in early Spring with a balanced fruit tree fertiliser. A second light feed in mid-Summer may help support fruit development.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and dry periods, especially while fruit is forming. Avoid waterlogged soil.
Pest Control: Monitor for pear slug, aphids, and codling moth. Use traps or sprays as needed to manage infestations.
Disease Management: Very resistant to fireblight, but still watch for signs of pear scab or rust. Remove affected material and maintain airflow.
