Olive Frantoio

Olea europaea Frantoio is a medium-sized, Italian olive tree with a commanding presence, reaching heights of 6-8m and widths of 4-6m. Its elongated, lance-shaped leaves present a glossy-green top with a striking silver-grey underside. In the spring, the tree is adorned with fragrant white flowers, maturing into medium to large-sized, flavourful fruit. Transitioning from green to a dark purple-black when fully ripe, these olives are highly valued for the production of top-tier olive oil.

A versatile tree, Frantoio can be used for a variety of purposes. It can serve as a decorative privacy screen, a significant standalone feature, or an essential addition to your home orchard. It also thrives in a variety of soil types and conditions, but prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Regular watering during the growing season and annual pruning are recommended to promote its optimal fruit production and maintain its shape and size. Bring a piece of Mediterranean charm and a practical harvest of delicious olives into your garden with Olea europaea Frantoio,

Trimming: Trim in late winter or early spring to maintain shape, remove dead or crossing branches, and improve airflow through the canopy. For hedging, lightly trim once or twice during the growing season to keep a dense, tidy form.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser, avoiding excessive nitrogen as this can encourage leafy growth at the expense of fruiting.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment, then only during extended dry periods once mature, especially while fruit is developing.

Pest Control: Watch for scale insects, olive lace bug, and mealybug. Treat early with horticultural oil or an appropriate insecticide.

Disease Management: Monitor for peacock spot, anthracnose, and root rot, which may show as leaf spots, premature leaf drop, fruit blemishes, or dieback. Improve airflow, avoid waterlogged soils, remove infected material, and apply a suitable fungicide if disease persists.
