Prunus persica Nectar Babe is a compact, deciduous dwarf nectarine valued for its abundant crops of red-skinned fruit with sweet, golden-yellow flesh and excellent flavour. In early spring, it produces soft pink flowers, followed by fruit ripening in mid to late summer. Its naturally small size and attractive form make it ideal for patios and smaller gardens.
Perfect for edible, courtyard, and container gardens, Nectarine Nectar Babe thrives in full sun with fertile, free-draining soil and benefits from regular watering and feeding during the growing season. Protect from late frosts while flowering. Space approximately 1.2 to 1.5 metres apart if planting in the ground.
Forms a compact, rounded tree reaching around 1.2 to 1.5 metres high and wide.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring before bud burst to maintain an open, vase-like shape and encourage strong fruiting wood. Remove any dead, damaged or congested branches. As a dwarf variety, it requires only light pruning to control height and shape. Summer pruning after harvest helps manage size.
Deadheading: Not applicable, but thinning developing fruit in early summer will improve fruit size, reduce limb stress and support overall tree health.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In containers or poor soils, supplement with a liquid fertiliser every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season to support vigorous growth and fruiting.
Watering: Water regularly, especially during flowering and fruit development. Maintain consistent soil moisture but avoid waterlogging. Container-grown trees may require more frequent watering. Mulch helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, leaf curl aphid and scale. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed. Netting may be required to protect ripening fruit from birds.
Disease Management: Prone to peach leaf curl. Apply a copper-based fungicide in winter and again at bud swell. Remove and dispose of infected leaves as they appear. Provide good airflow and avoid overhead watering to reduce fungal risk. Clear fallen leaves and fruit to minimise disease carryover.
