Nectarine Garden Delight

Prunus persica Garden Delight is a compact, deciduous nectarine variety specially bred for smaller gardens and container growing. In early to mid-spring, it produces a show of pink flowers, followed by medium-sized, red-blushed fruit with juicy, yellow flesh and rich, sweet flavour ripening in mid to late summer. Its tidy, rounded form and heavy fruiting habit make it an excellent choice for home orchards.

Ideal for edible, courtyard, and contemporary gardens, Nectarine Garden Delight is perfect for pots, small garden spaces, or orchard borders. It thrives in full sun with fertile, free-draining soil and benefits from regular watering and feeding during the growing season. Protect from late frosts during flowering. Space approximately 1.5 to 2 metres apart if planting multiple trees.

Forms a compact, rounded tree reaching around 1.5 to 2 metres high and wide.

Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring before bud burst to maintain an open, vase-shaped structure. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches and shorten new growth to encourage strong fruiting wood. Summer pruning can be done after harvest to manage size.

Deadheading: Not applicable, but thinning excess young fruit in early summer will improve fruit size and reduce strain on branches.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils, supplement with a liquid feed every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season to support healthy growth and fruit development.

Watering: Water regularly, especially during flowering and fruit development. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, leaf curl aphid and scale. Treat infestations early with neem oil or insecticidal soap. Netting may be needed to protect ripening fruit from birds.

Disease Management: Susceptible to peach leaf curl. Spray with a copper-based fungicide during winter dormancy and again at bud swell. Remove and destroy any affected leaves. Ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering to reduce fungal risk. Clean up fallen leaves and fruit to prevent disease carryover.
