Morus alba Pendula, or weeping white mulberry, is a grafted deciduous tree with a graceful, cascading form and deeply lobed, glossy green leaves. In spring, it produces small greenish flowers, followed by sweet, edible white to pink berries in early summer. Its foliage turns bright yellow in autumn, and the weeping branches create striking structure even in winter.
Perfect as a feature tree for lawns, courtyards, or garden focal points in both formal and informal settings, it thrives in full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. Drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from shelter when young. Grows 2 to 3 metres tall and wide, forming a sculptural, umbrella-like canopy.
Trimming: Prune in late winter while dormant to maintain its weeping form and remove any dead, damaged, or congested branches. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood, as recovery can be slow.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy foliage and fruit production.
Watering: Water regularly during the first 1–2 years to establish a strong root system. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during extended dry periods.
Pest Control: Watch for scale insects and spider mites, particularly in hot, dry conditions. Treat infestations with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap.
Disease Management: Can be susceptible to bacterial blight and leaf spot. Look for blackened shoots or dark spots on leaves—remove affected areas and apply a copper-based fungicide if necessary. Ensure good airflow around the canopy to reduce disease risk.
