Lemon Meyer is a prolific producer of thin-skinned, sweet and juicy fruit from an early age. Lemon Meyer is the most widely grown and most frost-hardy lemon hybrid. Sweetly fragrant flowers. Great in pots out on the deck, so you have quick access to lemons when you are craving a Gin and Tonic. Grows to a maximum height of 1.8m tall.
Trimming: Trim Lemon ‘Meyer’ after fruiting, removing dead, damaged, crossing, or inward-growing branches to maintain an open, airy shape. Lightly thin crowded growth to improve airflow and make harvesting easier, but avoid heavy pruning.
Fertilising: Feed regularly through the growing season with a citrus fertiliser, following the label rate. Apply fertiliser around the drip line and water it in well. Avoid applying fertiliser directly against the trunk.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Once established, deep water during extended dry periods and while fruit is developing, as inconsistent watering can cause fruit drop or splitting.
Pest control: Watch for aphids, scale, whitefly, mealybug, mites, and citrus leaf miner. Signs include curled or distorted new growth, sticky honeydew, sooty mould, webbing, or silvery trails in young leaves. Treat with horticultural oil, insecticidal soap, or a suitable citrus spray, and remove badly affected growth if needed.
Disease management: Look out for root rot, citrus scab, sooty mould, and collar rot. Signs include yellowing leaves, poor vigour, leaf or fruit scabbing, black surface mould, or dark, soft bark near the base. Improve drainage, avoid overwatering, keep mulch clear of the trunk, prune for airflow, and use an appropriate copper-based spray or fungicide where suitable.
