Feijoa Kakapo

Feijoa Kakapo is a compact, evergreen feijoa variety prized for its upright growth habit and reliable fruiting. It features soft grey-green foliage and striking red and white flowers in late Spring, followed by medium to large, flavourful fruit maturing in Autumn. The sweet, aromatic fruit is ideal for eating fresh or using in preserves and desserts.

Well-suited to edible, coastal, or contemporary gardens, Feijoa Kakapo is ideal for hedging, screening, or feature planting in smaller spaces. It prefers a sunny position with free-draining soil and copes well with dry conditions and coastal exposure once established. Plant with another Feijoa variety nearby to ensure consistent fruit set. Space approximately 1-1.5 metres apart for hedging.

Forms a tidy, upright shrub approximately 2-2.5 metres high and 1.5-2 metres wide.

Trimming: Prune lightly after fruiting to shape the tree and maintain good airflow. Remove dead, crossing, or crowded branches. For use as a hedge, trim more regularly but avoid pruning during flowering or early fruit development.

Fertilising: Feed with a balanced fruit tree fertiliser in early spring and again in mid-summer. Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure to support soil health and moisture retention.

Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the establishment phase and through flowering and fruiting. Once established, Kākāpō is drought tolerant but produces better fruit with consistent moisture during dry spells.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Monitor for scale insects and guava moth in affected regions. Use horticultural oil for scale, and consider exclusion nets or pheromone traps to manage guava moth.

Disease Management: Rarely troubled by disease. Promote good airflow through regular pruning and avoid overhead watering. Clear fallen fruit and leaf litter to minimise the risk of fungal issues.
