Currant White

Currant White is a deciduous fruiting shrub grown for its translucent white berries that ripen in mid to late summer. The fruit is sweet with a mild, less acidic flavour than red currants, making it ideal for fresh eating, baking, preserves, and desserts. Clusters of greenish flowers appear in spring, followed by heavy crops of glossy white berries. Reaching 1 to 1.5 metres high and wide, it suits edible, cottage, and low-maintenance garden styles.

Plant in full sun to partial shade with fertile, free-draining soil. Mulch annually and water during dry spells for best yields. Space plants 1.2 to 1.5 metres apart. Prune in winter to maintain an open structure and encourage productive wood. A reliable, compact fruiting shrub that adds ornamental and edible value to smaller garden spaces.

Trimming: Prune in winter while dormant to maintain an open structure and encourage strong fruiting wood. Remove up to a third of the oldest stems at the base each year, and shorten side shoots to 1-3 buds to promote fruiting spurs.

Deadheading: Not applicable, but remove any damaged or unripe fruit and fallen leaves to maintain plant hygiene.

Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser or compost. A potassium-rich liquid feed during fruit development can improve yield and flavour.

Watering: Water regularly during dry periods, especially while fruit is forming. Maintain even moisture levels-mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the stems.

Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, sawfly larvae, and currant blister mite. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil early if infestations appear. Netting may be needed to protect ripening fruit from birds.

Disease Management: Watch for powdery mildew and leaf spot-ensure good airflow, avoid overhead watering, and remove affected foliage promptly. Regular pruning helps reduce disease pressure and improves sunlight penetration.
