Citrus Key Lime

Citrus aurantiifolia Key Lime is a compact, evergreen fruiting tree known for its small, round, thin-skinned limes with a distinctive tart flavour and aromatic juice. Also known as Mexican Lime, it produces fragrant white flowers in Spring and Summer, followed by fruit that ripens to pale green or yellow. Its compact size and prolific fruiting make it ideal for home gardens and container growing.

Perfect for Mediterranean, edible, or subtropical gardens, Citrus Key Lime thrives in full sun with free-draining soil and benefits from regular watering and feeding during the growing season. Protect from frost and cold winds. Space approximately 2-3 metres apart when planting in the ground, or grow in a large container in a sunny, sheltered position.

Forms a compact, rounded tree approximately 2-2.5 metres high and 1.5-2 metres wide.

Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the tree and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Maintain an open centre for airflow and light penetration. Light trimming after harvest helps keep it compact and productive.

Deadheading: Not applicable, but remove any fallen or damaged fruit to reduce disease risk.

Fertilising: Feed in early spring and again in midsummer with a citrus-specific or balanced slow-release fertiliser high in nitrogen. Supplement with trace elements like magnesium and iron if leaf yellowing occurs.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, water deeply but infrequently - allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry between waterings. Increase watering during flowering and fruit development, especially in dry or windy conditions.

Pest Control: Monitor for citrus leaf miner, aphids, scale insects, and sooty mould. Treat infestations with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap. Keep the canopy open and clean to reduce pest habitat.

Disease Management: Watch for signs of citrus canker, root rot, or greasy spot. Ensure well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and dispose of any diseased foliage or fruit promptly. Avoid overhead watering and mulch away from the trunk to reduce fungal risks.
