Citrus junos (Yuzu)

Citrus junos (Yuzu) is a hardy, slow-growing citrus tree native to East Asia, prized for its highly aromatic, rough-skinned yellow fruit used in Japanese and Korean cuisine. The fruit ripens in late autumn and is valued for its intense, tart flavour-combining notes of lemon, mandarin, and grapefruit-ideal for sauces, drinks, and preserves. Featuring dark green, glossy foliage and fragrant white flowers in spring, Yuzu reaches around 2-3 metres high and wide, making it suitable for orchard-style, courtyard, and container gardens.

Plant in full sun with free-draining, fertile soil. Protect from hard frost, especially when young. Space at least 1.5-2 metres apart in the ground or grow in a large container in cooler regions. Water regularly during dry periods and apply citrus fertiliser during the growing season. Prune lightly to maintain shape and encourage airflow.

Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches and lightly shape the canopy to improve air circulation and sunlight penetration. Avoid heavy pruning, as fruit is borne on mature wood.

Deadheading: Not applicable, as Yuzu is grown for fruit rather than ornamental flowers.

Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a citrus-specific or balanced fertiliser high in potassium and magnesium. Repeat feeding every 6-8 weeks during the growing season. Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure, keeping it clear of the trunk.

Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the establishment phase and dry periods. Yuzu prefers moist, well-drained soil-avoid waterlogging or allowing the soil to dry out completely, particularly when flowering or fruiting.

Pest Control: Monitor for citrus leaf miner, scale insects, aphids, and mites. Treat infestations early with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap. Keep an eye out for sooty mould, which is often associated with pest activity.

Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues such as citrus canker or root rot. Avoid overhead watering, and plant in well-drained soil. Remove and dispose of any affected leaves or fruit to reduce disease spread.
