Blueberry Rahi is a high-yielding, mid to late-season blueberry bred in New Zealand for commercial and home garden performance. It produces large, firm berries with a sweet flavour and excellent storage qualities. Flowering begins in late Spring, with fruit ripening from mid to late Summer. The foliage turns brilliant shades of red and orange in Autumn.
Ideal for productive garden beds, edible landscapes, or feature planting, it suits lifestyle block, cottage, and modern garden designs.
Plant in full sun with acidic, free-draining soil. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and fruiting. Space plants 1.2–1.5m apart to ensure airflow and robust growth.
Mature size: Upright and vigorous, growing to approximately 1.8–2m tall and 1.5m wide.
Trimming: Prune in late winter to early spring while dormant. Remove any dead, damaged, or congested branches to improve airflow and maintain a strong, upright structure. For older plants, rejuvenate by cutting back up to a third of the oldest canes at ground level to encourage new, productive growth.
Deadheading: Not necessary, but remove any unharvested or shrivelled berries after fruiting to keep the plant tidy and reduce the risk of disease.
Fertilising: Apply a fertiliser designed for acid-loving plants (e.g., camellias or rhododendrons) in early spring. If needed, give a second, lighter feed in late summer. Avoid lime-based or alkaline fertilisers to maintain the required soil acidity.
Watering: Water consistently during the establishment period and in dry weather. ‘Rahi’ produces large fruit and benefits from steady moisture throughout the flowering and fruiting season. Mulch with pine bark or other acidic organic material to retain soil moisture and regulate temperature.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, but ripe fruit may attract birds—netting is recommended during the ripening phase. Watch for aphids or scale insects on new growth and treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure well-drained soil to prevent root rot. In humid conditions, check for powdery mildew (white, powdery coating on leaves) and treat with a sulphur-based fungicide if detected. Promote good airflow with regular pruning and adequate spacing.
