Blueberry Blast

Blueberry Blast is a compact, evergreen blueberry variety known for its high yield of medium to large, sweet blue fruit in mid to late summer. With attractive foliage and white spring flowers, it is ideal for edible gardens, containers, or mixed borders.

Plant in full sun with free-draining, acidic soil rich in organic matter. Water regularly, especially during fruit development, and mulch to retain soil moisture. Prune after fruiting to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Space plants 80 centimetres to 1 metre apart if planting in groups.

Grows to around 1 to 1.2 metres tall and wide.

Trimming: Prune in late winter while the plant is dormant. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and lightly thin the centre to improve airflow. Cut back older wood to encourage productive new growth.

Deadheading: Not required, but removing any spent or damaged flower clusters early in the season can help redirect energy into fruit development.

Fertilising: Apply a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring, just as growth begins. A second, lighter application can be made in late spring after flowering.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during fruit development and dry periods. Avoid waterlogging by ensuring excellent drainage. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and maintain acidity.

Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, caterpillars, and thrips. Netting may be required to protect ripening fruit from birds. Use insecticidal soap if pests are present.

Disease Management: Ensure good airflow and avoid wetting foliage to reduce the risk of fungal issues such as leaf spot or botrytis. Use well-drained, acidic soil and remove any diseased leaves or fruit promptly.
