Blackcurrant Magnus

Blackcurrant Magnus is a vigorous, late-season variety producing large, flavour-packed berries ideal for fresh use, preserves, and juicing. Known for its excellent balance of sweetness and acidity, this traditional cultivar delivers consistent yields and performs well in cooler climates. Its open, upright habit allows for easy harvesting and good airflow.

A great fit for edible, cottage, and kitchen gardens, it works well in borders, fruit cages, or mixed berry plantings.

Thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers fertile, moisture-retentive, well-draining soil. Annual winter pruning encourages strong new growth and fruiting. Space 1.2–1.5 metres apart.

Mature size reaches around 1.2–1.5 metres tall and wide, forming a sturdy, open bush.

Trimming: Prune in winter while the plant is dormant. Remove old stems (three years and older) at ground level to encourage fresh, vigorous growth. Retain a mix of one- and two-year-old stems, which produce the most fruit. Thin overcrowded shoots to improve airflow and light penetration.

Deadheading: Not applicable.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced general-purpose fertiliser or compost in early spring. Once flowering begins, switch to a potassium-rich feed to support fruit development and improve yield.

Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, particularly during flowering and fruit development. Mulching in spring helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids and big bud mite—aphids can distort new growth and should be treated with insecticidal soap. Swollen buds indicate big bud mite; remove and destroy affected buds to prevent spread.

Disease Management: Prone to powdery mildew and leaf spot in humid or shaded conditions. Ensure good airflow through winter pruning and avoid overhead watering. Remove fallen leaves and any diseased material promptly. Stay alert for signs of reversion virus—poor fruiting and altered leaf shape—and remove affected plants if identified.
