Blackberry Black Satin

Blackberry Black Satin is a vigorous, thornless blackberry known for its high yields and rich, sweetly tart flavour. Its arching canes bear clusters of glossy black fruit in mid to late summer, ideal for fresh eating, baking, and preserves. The berries are large and firm, making them easy to pick and handle. This deciduous shrub also offers seasonal interest with white flowers in spring, followed by dark green foliage that turns yellow in autumn.

Perfect for kitchen gardens, edible landscapes, or training along fences and trellises, Black Satin suits both rural and urban planting schemes. It thrives in full sun with well-drained, fertile soil and benefits from consistent moisture. Allow ample space between plants—around 1.5 to 2 metres—for airflow and ease of harvest.

Mature size: Reaches 1.5 to 2 metres in height with a similar spread when supported.

Trimming: Prune in late winter by cutting all fruited canes down to ground level. Select and tie in strong new canes to a support structure, spacing them to encourage airflow and sunlight penetration. In summer, tip-prune new canes once they reach around 1.5–2 m to promote lateral growth and future fruiting.

Deadheading: Not applicable.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. Once flowering begins, switch to a potassium-rich fertiliser (such as tomato food) to encourage better fruiting.

Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially during dry periods and fruit development. Mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Pest Control: Generally resistant, but monitor for aphids and spider mites. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if infestations occur. Netting may help prevent bird damage to ripening fruit.

Disease Management: ‘Navaho’ is relatively disease-resistant, but good hygiene is still important. Remove spent canes and fallen leaves to prevent fungal build-up. Ensure proper spacing and airflow to avoid mildew and cane diseases. Avoid overhead watering and ensure soil drains freely.
