Blackcurrant Laxton Tinker

Blackcurrant Laxton Tinker is a traditional English variety known for its rich, full-bodied flavour and reliable mid-season cropping. It produces medium-sized, glossy black berries in generous clusters, ideal for jam-making, cordials, and desserts. This well-established cultivar is favoured for its excellent taste and dependable harvests.

A strong choice for cottage, kitchen, and edible gardens, it performs well in mixed fruit plantings or as a productive standalone shrub.

Thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers fertile, moisture-retentive, well-draining soil. Prune annually in winter to maintain vigour and fruit quality. Space plants 1.2–1.5 metres apart.

Mature size reaches 1.2–1.5 metres tall and wide, forming a rounded, bushy shape.

Trimming: Prune during winter while dormant. Remove older stems (3 years and older) at the base to stimulate new, fruit-bearing growth. Aim to keep a balanced framework of one- and two-year-old wood for best yields. After harvesting, light summer pruning can tidy the shape if needed.

Deadheading: Not applicable.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser or well-rotted compost in early spring to promote strong growth. During flowering and fruit set, a potassium-rich fertiliser (such as tomato feed) can help improve fruit quality and yield.

Watering: Water regularly during dry periods, especially in spring and early summer when fruit is developing. Use mulch to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

Pest Control: Monitor for aphids and big bud mite. Treat aphids with insecticidal soap. Remove swollen buds caused by big bud mite and destroy them to reduce future infestation.

Disease Management: Susceptible to leaf spot and powdery mildew in damp or crowded conditions. Prune to ensure good airflow, and remove any fallen or diseased leaves. Check for signs of reversion virus—poor cropping and distorted leaves—and remove affected plants if confirmed.
