Apricot Goldstrike

Prunus armeniaca Goldstrike is a vigorous, late-season apricot variety known for its large, golden fruit and excellent flavour. The apricots are firm and juicy with a sweet, well-balanced taste, making them ideal for fresh eating, preserving, and drying. Flowering in mid to late spring, Goldstrike ripens in late summer and is noted for its strong, reliable cropping.

Well suited to home orchards, lifestyle blocks, and larger productive gardens. Complements Mediterranean, edible, or traditional garden designs.

Thrives in a sunny, sheltered site with fertile, free-draining soil. Requires protection from late frosts during flowering and benefits from consistent watering during fruit development. Space trees 3–4 metres apart for healthy growth and airflow.

Mature size: Typically reaches 4–5 metres tall with a strong, spreading growth habit.

Trimming: Prune in late summer after fruiting to maintain a well-structured, open canopy. Remove any dead, diseased, or inward-growing branches. Avoid winter pruning, as this increases the risk of bacterial canker.

Deadheading: Not applicable for fruit trees.

Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced fertiliser to support new growth. As fruit begins to develop, apply a potassium-rich fertiliser to enhance flowering and fruit quality. Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure, keeping it clear of the trunk.

Watering: Maintain consistent moisture during establishment and dry periods, especially from spring through early summer. Ensure soil is free-draining to prevent root issues from waterlogging.

Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, mites, and leafroller caterpillars. Treat as needed with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap. Net trees during fruit ripening to deter birds.

Disease Management: Susceptible to brown rot and bacterial canker. Remove and destroy affected fruit and wood. Always prune in dry weather to limit disease spread and keep the canopy open for ventilation. Apply a copper-based fungicide in late winter to help prevent canker.
