Apricot Garden Annie

Prunus armeniaca Garden Annie is a compact, early-season apricot ideal for smaller gardens and container growing. This self-fertile variety produces medium-sized, golden-orange fruit with sweet, juicy flesh and a smooth texture, perfect for fresh eating. Flowering in early spring, it ripens from mid to late summer and is well suited to warmer areas with minimal frost.

Ideal for patio gardens, small urban spaces, or home orchards. Complements productive, modern, or courtyard garden styles.

Thrives in a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained, fertile soil and regular moisture through the growing season. Protect blossoms from late frosts if necessary. Space 2–3 metres apart when planting in-ground, or grow in large containers with good drainage.

Mature size: Typically grows to 2–2.5 metres tall with a naturally compact, rounded form.

Trimming: Prune lightly in late summer after fruiting to maintain a compact shape and remove any dead, diseased, or crossing branches. Avoid winter pruning, as apricots are prone to bacterial canker when pruned in damp, cold conditions.

Deadheading: Not applicable for fruit trees.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support strong growth. Use a potassium-rich fertiliser during fruit development to enhance flowering and fruit quality. Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure, keeping it clear of the trunk.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and in dry periods, especially from spring through early summer when fruit is forming. Ensure soil remains moist but well-drained—avoid both drought and waterlogging.

Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, mites, and leafroller caterpillars. Use insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if needed. Netting may be required to protect ripening fruit from birds.

Disease Management: Susceptible to brown rot and bacterial canker. Look for rotting spots on fruit or gumming on branches. Remove affected material promptly and dispose of any fallen or diseased fruit. Prune during dry weather to reduce infection risk and apply copper-based spray in late winter as a preventative.
