Apple Woolbrook Pippin
Notify MeMalus domestica Woolbrook Pippin is a heritage dessert apple with a distinctive flavour and attractive appearance. The medium-sized fruit features golden-green skin flushed with red and a rich, aromatic sweetness. Its firm, juicy flesh makes it excellent for fresh eating, and it stores well after harvesting. Flowering in mid-spring, this variety ripens in mid to late autumn, offering reliable productivity with traditional charm.
An excellent addition to home orchards, heritage collections, and cottage-style gardens. Complements productive or traditional garden settings.
Plant in full sun with fertile, free-draining soil and maintain consistent moisture. Requires a compatible pollinator for best fruit set. Space trees 3–4 metres apart to allow healthy growth and air circulation.
Mature size: Grows to approximately 4–5 metres tall with a well-rounded, slightly spreading form.
Trimming: Prune in winter to maintain a strong, open structure. Remove any dead, damaged, or overcrowded branches to improve airflow and light penetration, which support fruit quality and reduce disease risk.
Deadheading: Not applicable for fruit trees.
Fertilising: Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth and fruiting. An annual mulch of compost or well-rotted manure will help retain moisture and boost soil health.
Watering: Water young trees regularly during the establishment phase (first 1–2 years) and mature trees during extended dry periods, particularly from late spring through summer as fruit develops.
Pest Control: Keep an eye out for codling moth and aphids. Use pheromone traps for monitoring moths, and treat aphids with insecticidal soap or a strong jet of water. Natural predators like ladybirds can help control pest populations.
Disease Management: While not widely prone to disease, it’s wise to monitor for apple scab and powdery mildew. Remove and destroy any infected leaves or fruit. Apply a fungicide in early spring if necessary and prune to maintain good airflow.
