Apple Tydemans Early Worcester

Malus domestica Tydemans Early Worcester is an early-season apple valued for its fragrant, sweet flavour and attractive red skin. Bred in the UK as a cross between Worcester Pearmain and McIntosh, this variety produces medium-sized fruit with soft, juicy flesh and a delicate hint of strawberry. Flowering in mid-spring, it ripens early in the season—from late winter to early spring in warmer regions.

Ideal for home orchards, family gardens, and heritage-themed plantings. Complements traditional, cottage, or productive garden styles.

Performs best in a sunny, sheltered location with fertile, well-draining soil and regular moisture. A suitable pollinator nearby will ensure consistent fruiting. Allow 3–4 metres between trees for optimal growth and airflow.

Mature size: Grows to around 4–5 metres tall with a slightly spreading, rounded form.

Trimming: Prune in winter to maintain an open, balanced shape. Remove any dead, damaged, or congested branches to improve airflow and light penetration, which supports fruit ripening and helps prevent disease.

Deadheading: Not applicable for fruit trees.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth and early fruiting. Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure to enrich the soil and retain moisture.

Watering: Ensure regular watering during establishment and in dry periods, especially in late spring and early summer when fruit is developing. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely.

Pest Control: Watch for codling moth and green aphids. Use pheromone traps to monitor moth activity and treat aphid infestations with insecticidal soap or a strong water spray. Check young growth regularly for signs of pests.

Disease Management: Susceptible to powdery mildew and apple scab. Look for white, powdery coatings on young shoots and scabby patches on fruit or leaves. Remove and dispose of affected material, and apply a suitable fungicide in early spring if conditions favour disease. Prune to enhance airflow.
