Apple Sturmer Pippin

Malus domestica Sturmer Pippin is a traditional heritage apple prized for its dense, crisp flesh and tangy, complex flavour that sweetens with storage. The medium-sized fruit has green-yellow skin often flushed with bronze-red, and is ideal for fresh eating, juicing, or cooking. Flowering in mid to late spring, this late-season variety ripens in late autumn and is renowned for its excellent keeping qualities.

A strong choice for home orchards, lifestyle blocks, or heritage-style gardens. Complements productive, cottage, or traditional garden designs.

Prefers a sunny, sheltered location with fertile, free-draining soil and consistent moisture. Benefits from the presence of a compatible pollinator. Allow 3–4 metres between trees to ensure good airflow and growth.

Mature size: Typically reaches 4–5 metres tall with a sturdy, upright to slightly spreading form.

Trimming: Prune in winter to maintain structure and encourage fruiting. Remove any dead, diseased, or crossing branches, and open up the centre to improve light and airflow. This helps reduce disease and enhances fruit quality.

Deadheading: Not applicable for fruit trees.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth and fruit set. An annual mulch with compost or well-rotted manure will help maintain soil fertility and moisture.

Watering: Water regularly during the first 1–2 years after planting. Mature trees may need supplementary watering during extended dry spells, particularly in late spring and summer as fruit develops.

Pest Control: Susceptible to codling moth and woolly aphid. Use pheromone traps for moths and treat aphids with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil. Encourage natural predators such as ladybirds.

Disease Management: Generally robust but can be affected by apple scab and powdery mildew. Look for dark, scabby lesions or white, powdery growth on young foliage. Remove affected material promptly and consider a preventative fungicide spray in spring. Prune to maintain good airflow.
