Apple Prima

Malus domestica Prima is an early-season apple prized for its disease resistance, especially to apple scab. The fruit is medium-sized with a bright red flush over yellow-green skin, offering a sweet, mildly tart flavour and crisp texture. Flowering in mid-spring, it ripens early in the season, typically from late summer, making it one of the first apples ready to harvest.

Ideal for home orchards, lifestyle blocks, or family gardens, and suits traditional or productive garden styles.

Thrives in a sunny position with well-drained, fertile soil and regular watering during dry periods. Requires a compatible pollinator nearby for optimal fruit production. Space trees approximately 3–4 metres apart for healthy development.

Mature size: Grows to around 4–5 metres tall with a rounded, moderately spreading shape.

Trimming: Prune in winter to shape the tree and remove any dead, damaged, or congested growth. Open up the centre to improve airflow and light penetration, which supports healthy fruiting and disease resistance.

Deadheading: Not applicable for fruit trees.

Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and fruit set. Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure to enrich the soil and conserve moisture.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment (first 1–2 years) and in extended dry periods, particularly from late spring to early autumn while fruit is developing.

Pest Control: Keep an eye out for codling moth and green aphids. Use pheromone traps for moths and control aphids with insecticidal soap or a strong water spray. Encourage beneficial insects like ladybirds to help manage pest populations.

Disease Management: ‘Prima’ is bred for scab resistance, making it a lower-maintenance choice. Nonetheless, monitor for signs of powdery mildew—white, powdery coating on young leaves and shoots. Prune out affected areas and apply a fungicide if necessary. Maintain good airflow through regular pruning.
