Apple Pinkie

Malus domestica Pinkie is a compact, New Zealand-bred apple known for its crisp texture, sweet flavour, and excellent keeping qualities. Its medium-sized fruit features bright pink-red skin over a pale green base, with creamy white flesh that remains firm and juicy. Flowering in mid to late spring, this variety produces a reliable crop that ripens in mid to late autumn, often storing well into winter.

An excellent choice for home orchards, edible gardens, and compact spaces due to its naturally smaller growth habit. Complements modern, urban, or productive garden styles.

Prefers full sun and fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture. Best planted with a compatible pollinator nearby to ensure optimal fruiting. Space 2.5–3 metres apart to accommodate its smaller stature.

Mature size: Typically reaches 2.5–3 metres tall with a tidy, upright form.

Trimming: Prune lightly in winter to shape the tree and remove any dead, diseased, or crossing branches. Open up the centre to allow light and air to reach the fruiting wood. Avoid over-pruning, as this can reduce yield.

Deadheading: Not applicable for fruit trees.

Fertilising: In early spring, apply a balanced fertiliser to support healthy growth and fruit production. Mulch with compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil condition and moisture retention.

Watering: Ensure consistent watering during the first couple of years after planting, and in dry periods—especially over summer when the fruit is forming. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely.

Pest Control: Monitor for codling moth and woolly aphid. Use pheromone traps for moths, and treat woolly aphid infestations with horticultural oil or prune out affected wood.

Disease Management: Generally disease-resistant but may occasionally be affected by apple scab or powdery mildew. Remove and dispose of any infected leaves or fruit, and prune to maintain airflow. If necessary, apply an appropriate fungicide in early spring as a preventative measure.
