Apple Ingrid Marie

Malus domestica Ingrid Marie is a classic Danish heritage apple known for its deep red skin, aromatic flavour, and fine-textured, creamy white flesh. This mid-season apple offers a rich, slightly tangy taste, making it excellent for fresh eating and baking. It performs well in cooler climates and produces attractive fruit that stores moderately well after harvest.

A great addition to cottage, traditional, and heritage orchard gardens, especially where flavour and appearance are equally valued.

Plant in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and consistent moisture. Requires a compatible mid-season pollinator such as Cox’s Orange Pippin or Fuji for good fruit set.

Mature size: Typically reaches 3–4 metres high and wide as a free-standing tree, or smaller on dwarfing rootstock.

Trimming: Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant to create an open, airy canopy. Remove dead, diseased, or overcrowded branches to improve light penetration and airflow, supporting even fruit ripening and reducing disease risk.

Deadheading: Not applicable for apple trees.

Fertilising: Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and fruit production. Apply a mulch of compost or well-rotted manure annually around the base, keeping it clear of the trunk to avoid rot.

Watering: Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in summer and during fruit development. Deep, infrequent watering is best to encourage strong root systems.

Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, codling moth, and apple sawfly. Use pheromone traps for moths and treat aphid infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Good orchard hygiene helps reduce pest pressure.

Disease Management: 'Ingrid Marie' has good resistance to apple scab but may still be affected by powdery mildew and canker. Watch for signs such as white powder on leaves or sunken bark lesions. Prune for airflow, remove infected material, and apply fungicide if needed. Keep the area clear of fallen leaves and fruit.
