Malus domestica Hetlina is a modern disease-resistant apple variety, producing medium to large, red-blushed fruit with a sweet, slightly tangy flavour. Its crisp, juicy flesh makes it excellent for fresh eating, while also suitable for juicing and light cooking. A reliable mid-season apple, Hetlina is favoured for its clean, healthy foliage and strong resistance to scab and mildew, making it ideal for low-spray or organic gardens.
A strong choice for home orchards, edible gardens, and sustainable plantings, particularly in regions prone to disease pressure.
Plant in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and moderate moisture. Self-fertile but benefits from cross-pollination with compatible varieties such as Granny Smith or Braeburn.
Mature size: Grows 3–4 metres high and wide as a free-standing tree, or smaller when grafted onto dwarfing rootstock.
Trimming: Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant to establish a strong, open framework. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to improve light penetration and airflow, which supports healthy growth and fruit development.
Deadheading: Not required for apple trees.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure around the base, avoiding direct contact with the trunk, to improve soil structure and retain moisture.
Watering: Water deeply during extended dry periods, especially while the tree is establishing and during fruit set and development. Maintain consistent moisture levels without waterlogging.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, codling moth, and apple sawfly. Use pheromone traps for moths and treat aphids with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary. Encourage beneficial insects and maintain orchard hygiene.
Disease Management: 'Hetlina' has good disease resistance, especially to apple scab, but still monitor for signs of powdery mildew or canker. Prune to maintain airflow, remove affected material promptly, and apply fungicide if symptoms persist. Clean up fallen fruit and leaves to prevent overwintering pathogens.
