Apple Fuji

Malus domestica Fuji is a widely popular dessert apple celebrated for its exceptionally crisp texture and balanced sweetness with low acidity. The fruit is large, round, and flushed with red over yellow-green skin, offering juicy, firm flesh that holds well in storage. It ripens in late Autumn and is ideal for fresh eating, salads, and juicing.

Perfect for home orchards, edible gardens, and family-friendly planting, Fuji thrives in areas with a long growing season.

Plant in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and moderate moisture. For best fruit set, plant alongside a compatible pollinator such as Braeburn or Granny Smith.

Mature size: Typically grows 3–4 metres high and wide as a free-standing tree, or smaller on dwarfing rootstock.

Trimming: Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant. Focus on creating an open canopy by removing crowded, crossing, or inward-growing branches. This improves airflow and light penetration, encouraging better fruit development. Light summer pruning can help control vigorous growth.

Deadheading: Not applicable for apple trees.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring before new growth appears. Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure around the base (keeping it away from the trunk) to conserve moisture and enrich the soil.

Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the establishment phase and in dry spells, especially during fruit development. Avoid shallow watering, which can lead to surface rooting.

Pest Control: Monitor for codling moth, apple sawfly, aphids, and woolly apple aphid. Use pheromone traps for moths and natural predators where possible. Insecticidal soap or neem oil can be used as needed.

Disease Management: Susceptible to apple scab, powdery mildew, and fire blight. Look for discoloured or distorted leaves, spots on fruit, or dieback. Prune out infected areas, improve airflow with proper pruning, and apply fungicides if necessary. Keep the area clear of fallen fruit and leaves to reduce reinfection.
