Apple Braeburn
Notify MeMalus domestica Braeburn is a popular New Zealand-developed apple known for its crisp texture, rich flavour, and perfect balance of sweetness and acidity. The fruit is medium to large with red-orange skin over a yellow-green base and firm, juicy flesh. Ripening in late Autumn, Braeburn is excellent for fresh eating, baking, and long-term storage.
An ideal choice for home orchards and edible gardens, it suits a variety of garden styles including traditional and contemporary.
Plant in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and regular moisture. Requires a compatible pollinator such as Fuji, Granny Smith, or Gala for reliable fruiting.
Mature size: Grows to approximately 3–4 metres high and wide as a free-standing tree, or smaller when grown on dwarfing rootstock.
Trimming: Prune in late winter while dormant to create a strong, open framework. Remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches to improve light penetration and airflow, essential for even fruit ripening and reducing disease. Light summer pruning can help manage vigorous growth.
Deadheading: Not applicable for apple trees.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure around the base—keeping it clear of the trunk—to retain moisture and improve soil structure.
Watering: Water deeply during dry periods, particularly during flowering and fruit development. Young trees require regular watering until well established. Avoid waterlogging by ensuring good drainage.
Pest Control: Susceptible to codling moth, aphids, and apple sawfly. Use pheromone traps to monitor moth activity and treat aphids with neem oil or insecticidal soap. Keep the area under the tree clean to reduce pest overwintering.
Disease Management: 'Braeburn' is moderately susceptible to apple scab and powdery mildew. Look for dark leaf spots, fruit blemishes, or white powdery growth. Maintain airflow through pruning, clear fallen debris, and apply fungicide if symptoms occur.
