Apple Braeburn - Dwarf
Notify MeMalus domestica Braeburn – Dwarf offers all the flavour and versatility of the classic Braeburn apple in a compact, space-saving form. This dwarf variety produces medium to large red-orange fruit with crisp, juicy flesh and a well-balanced sweet-tart flavour, ideal for fresh eating, baking, and storing. Ripening in late Autumn, it’s a productive and reliable choice for small gardens or container growing.
Perfect for urban, courtyard, and edible gardens where space is limited but high-quality fruit is still desired.
Plant in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and moderate moisture. Requires a compatible pollinator such as Fuji, Gala, or Granny Smith for optimal cropping.
Mature size: Grows to approximately 2–2.5 metres high and wide, with a naturally compact, manageable form.
Trimming: Prune in late winter to maintain a compact, open structure suitable for smaller spaces or containers. Remove dead, diseased, or inward-growing branches to improve airflow and light, which supports fruit quality. Light summer pruning may be needed to manage height and shape.
Deadheading: Not applicable for apple trees.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Container-grown trees may require more frequent feeding. Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure, keeping it clear of the trunk, to improve moisture retention and soil health.
Watering: Dwarf trees, especially those in containers, need regular deep watering—more often during hot, dry periods and while fruit is developing. Ensure excellent drainage to prevent waterlogging.
Pest Control: Monitor for codling moth, aphids, and apple sawfly. Use pheromone traps to detect moths, and treat aphids with neem oil or insecticidal soap. Maintain cleanliness around the tree to deter pests.
Disease Management: 'Braeburn' is moderately susceptible to apple scab and powdery mildew. Look for leaf spotting, fruit blemishes, or white powdery patches. Prune to keep air circulating, remove any affected material, and apply fungicide if needed. Clean up fallen leaves and fruit to prevent disease carryover.
