Apple Ballerina Polka
Notify MeMalus domestica Ballerina Polka is a space-saving, columnar apple variety that produces crisp, sweet-tart red apples along its upright central stem. This mid- to late-season variety is well-suited for fresh eating, baking, and juicing. With its narrow, branchless form and minimal pruning requirements, Polka is perfect for small gardens, pots, or tight planting spaces.
Ideal for urban, contemporary, and edible garden designs where vertical growth and easy harvesting are a priority.
Plant in full sun with well-drained, fertile soil and consistent moisture. Self-fertile, though yields can be improved with a compatible pollinator such as Ballerina Bolero or Granny Smith.
Mature size: Grows to approximately 3 metres tall and 60–80 cm wide, maintaining a slender, upright form.
Trimming: Prune lightly in late winter to maintain its natural columnar shape. Remove any dead, damaged, or inward-growing branches. Thin congested spurs to improve airflow and fruit quality, but avoid heavy pruning that alters the upright habit.
Deadheading: Not applicable for apple trees.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and fruiting. Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure around the base, keeping it clear of the trunk, to conserve moisture and improve soil health.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and in dry spells, especially during flowering and fruit development. Ensure soil is well-drained—this variety also performs well in large containers, where watering needs may be higher.
Pest Control: Monitor for codling moth, aphids, and apple sawfly. Use pheromone traps for moths and treat aphid infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Keep the base of the tree clean to minimise pest habitat.
Disease Management: 'Polka' has good resistance to apple scab. Nonetheless, watch for powdery mildew or canker. Prune for good airflow, remove affected material, and apply fungicide if needed. Keep the area around the tree free of fallen fruit and leaves to reduce disease risk.
