Apple Aherlander Pfannkuchen

Malus domestica Aherlander Pfannkuchen is a rare heritage apple variety, prized for its large, flattened fruit and excellent cooking qualities. With green-yellow skin often brushed with red and a firm, mildly tart flesh, it holds its shape well when baked—making it especially suited to pancakes, tarts, and traditional desserts. Ripening in mid- to late Autumn, it is valued for both its flavour and unique appearance.

Ideal for traditional orchards, culinary gardens, and heritage-style plantings where both form and function are important.

Plant in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and regular moisture. Requires a compatible mid-season pollinator such as Gravenstein or Cox’s Orange Pippin for reliable cropping.

Mature size: Typically grows 3–4 metres high and wide as a free-standing tree, or smaller on semi-dwarfing rootstock.

Trimming: Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant to develop a strong, open canopy. Remove any dead, diseased, or crossing branches to improve light penetration and airflow, which supports healthy growth and fruit production.

Deadheading: Not applicable for apple trees.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote vigorous growth and fruiting. Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure around the base, keeping it clear of the trunk, to enhance soil fertility and moisture retention.

Watering: Water deeply during dry periods, especially during the establishment phase and while the fruit is developing. Ensure the soil is well-draining to prevent root issues.

Pest Control: Monitor for common apple pests such as codling moth, aphids, and apple sawfly. Use pheromone traps to detect moth activity and treat aphid infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary. Encourage beneficial insects and maintain good orchard hygiene by removing fallen leaves and fruit.

Disease Management: 'Altländer Pfannkuchenapfel' is considered robust and less susceptible to diseases. However, regular pruning to maintain good airflow and sanitation practices, such as clearing fallen debris, will help minimise potential disease risks.
