Buxus, Myosotidium, Arthropodium & Hydrangea Flatpack: Ideal for Dark or Damp Gardens

At the back, is the classic white Hydrangea Bridal Bouquet. It is arguably one of the best Hydrangeas for garden use. Not only is it compact and easily managed, but it also remains consistent in its colour. There's no worry about unexpected shades of pink or blue intruding into the garden. It's recommended to place these at the back in a row to establish the first layer of height, ideally keeping them at a height of around 1.5m. To maintain their size, simply cut them back by about a third each year.

The second layer introduces the Arthropodium and the Forget-me-not. They are best used in groups of three, creating a cohesive, mass-planted appearance. The intention is for these plants to grow close together, covering the soil. This coverage not only adds visual appeal but also hinders weed growth by preventing sunlight from reaching the soil. Both plants prefer some protection, making the shaded area under larger trees an ideal location. While both are spring-flowering plants, they are more renowned for their evergreen foliage. The strappy nature of the Arthropodium pairs well with the large, lush leaves of the Chatham Island Forget-me-nots. In regions with harsh frosts, it's advisable to cover these plants with frost cloth for the first two or three years while they establish themselves.

Lastly, the Buxus hedge at the front serves as an unsung hero of this garden design. A neatly trimmed hedge at the front of a garden hides a multitude of sins. Haven't had a chance to weed the garden recently? No worries, the hedge acts as a perfect disguise! Buxus is a top choice for this purpose due to its slow growth rate. While it might take some time to establish, the ongoing maintenance is minimal, requiring two trims a year.
