Quercus Palustris, also known as the Pin Oak or Swamp Oak, is a large, deciduous tree is renowned for its elegant, pyramidal shape, glossy, deep green leaves that transform into vibrant shades of crimson and bronze in the autumn, and its distinctive, pin-like lower branches.
It prefers well-drained soil but can adapt to and tolerate wet and clay soils as well. It prefers full sun exposure for the best growth and the most vibrant autumn colour display.
Thanks to its majestic height and distinctive branching, the Pin Oak makes an excellent specimen or shade tree for large gardens, parks, or avenues. Its attractive form and seasonal colour changes provide year-round interest. Additionally, its tolerance for wetter soils makes it a practical choice for areas with poor drainage.
It can achieve impressive heights of 20-25 metres. It has a relatively fast growth rate for an oak tree, so it can quickly become a feature within your landscape, though its ultimate size should be considered when planting.
Field-grown plants are grown directly in open fields, enabling their roots to spread and develop naturally, resulting in larger size, established root systems, and increased resilience. When transporting these plants, hessian, a coarse fabric made from natural fibres like jute, is commonly used to wrap their roots, providing protection during transportation and handling.
