Beilschmiedia taraire, commonly known as Taraire, is a lush, native evergreen tree admired for its large, leathery, deep green leaves with a distinctive bluish underside. Inconspicuous spring flowers give way to large, dark purple fruit that are a vital food source for native birds, especially kererū. Its dense canopy and upright form make it an excellent choice for creating shade and supporting biodiversity.
Ideal for native, rainforest, and restoration planting schemes, it also suits large residential or public gardens where its mature size can be accommodated.
Thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture. Shelter from strong winds when young. Space generously to allow for canopy development.
Mature size: Grows 10–15 metres high with a broad, spreading canopy of up to 6 metres.
Field-grown plants are grown directly in open fields, enabling their roots to spread and develop naturally, resulting in larger size, established root systems, and increased resilience. When transporting these plants, hessian, a coarse fabric made from natural fibres like jute, is commonly used to wrap their roots, providing protection during transportation and handling.
Trimming: Minimal pruning is needed. Lightly trim in late winter to remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches and to shape young trees. Avoid heavy pruning, as this native prefers a natural form.
Deadheading: Not applicable, as the small, inconspicuous flowers do not require removal.
Fertilising: Generally not needed in fertile soils. If grown in poor conditions, apply a slow-release, low-phosphorus fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. Mulching with organic matter will also benefit young trees.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase (first 2–3 years), particularly through dry periods. Once established, taraire is relatively drought-tolerant but appreciates occasional deep watering during extended dry spells.
Pest Control: Typically pest-resistant. Rarely affected by insects, though monitor for scale or caterpillars on young plants. Treat with horticultural oil or neem if necessary.
Disease Management: Very low susceptibility to disease. Ensure good drainage and avoid overwatering, especially in heavier soils, to prevent root issues. Maintain healthy leaf litter and mulch around the base to support beneficial soil organisms.
