Euphorbia cyparissias

Euphorbia cyparissias is a low-growing, spreading perennial known for its fine, needle-like blue-green foliage that turns rich shades of orange and red in autumn. In spring, it produces clusters of bright yellow-green flowering bracts that sit above the airy foliage, creating a soft, textured effect across the garden.

Thriving in full sun with well-draining soil, Euphorbia cyparissias suits cottage, Mediterranean, and naturalistic garden styles. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and can spread vigorously, so it is best planted where it can be contained if needed. At maturity, it forms a mat around 20–30 cm tall and 60–90 cm wide, offering long-lasting seasonal interest.

Trimming: Trim back spent flowering stems after flowering finishes in early summer to maintain a tidy appearance and to control spread, cutting them close to the base.

Deadheading: Remove faded flowering bracts promptly to prevent excessive self-seeding and to keep the plant looking fresh; always wear gloves as the sap is irritating.

Fertilising: Fertilising is generally unnecessary; however, a light application of balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring can boost vigour in poor soils.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and needs watering only during prolonged dry spells.

Pest Control: Typically pest-free. Occasional monitoring for aphids in spring is recommended; infestations can be treated with an organic insecticidal spray or a firm blast of water.

Disease Management: Euphorbia cyparissias is generally disease-resistant but can suffer from fungal root issues in poorly drained soils. Ensure planting in free-draining soil and avoid waterlogging to prevent problems.
