Taxodium McLaren Falls
Taxodium McLaren Falls is a distinctive deciduous conifer valued for its soft, feathery foliage and strong upright form. Fresh green growth creates a light, airy canopy through spring and summer, then turns warm copper tones in Autumn before the needles drop. In spring it produces small, inconspicuous flowers, followed by rounded cones that add extra texture as the season progresses, making it an excellent feature tree for larger gardens and park-like settings.
Perfect for parkland, woodland, or contemporary garden styles, McLaren Falls thrives in full sun and prefers moist soil, coping well in heavier ground and even damp sites once established. Water well during dry spells, especially while young, and allow generous space for its mature canopy and root spread. Space trees 6-10 m apart for specimen planting or an evenly spaced row.
Mature size: Reaches around 12-18 m in height and 6-10 m in width, forming a tall, pyramidal tree with a broadening crown over time.
Trimming: Prune in late winter while dormant to remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Minimal pruning is required, but shaping when young can help develop a strong framework.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In nutrient-poor soils, a second light feed in mid-summer can support healthy growth and foliage colour.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it tolerates both wet and dry soils, though it performs best in consistently moist, well-drained conditions.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally check for scale or aphids on young growth and treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if needed.
Disease Management: Very low disease risk. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot in compacted or poorly drained soils. Remove any dead or discoloured foliage to maintain plant health.
