Pinus radiata

Pinus radiata, commonly known as Monterey pine, is a species of pine native to the Central Coast of California and Mexico.

Well-suited to parks, rural properties and large gardens, Pinus radiata thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil. It tolerates a range of conditions but benefits from some shelter in exposed sites when young. Best planted with ample space to accommodate its mature size.

Grows up to 20–30 metres tall and 10–15 metres wide at full maturity.

Trimming: Pruning is rarely required but can be done in late winter to remove dead or damaged branches, especially during the juvenile shrub-like stage. Allow the natural transition to adult form without heavy interference to preserve its unique growth habit.

Deadheading: Not applicable, as Mataī does not produce traditional flowers.

Fertilising: Not typically needed in native or restoration settings. If planted in poor soils, apply a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth, particularly in juvenile plants.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Mataī is tolerant of light frost and summer dryness but benefits from deep watering during prolonged dry periods, especially in exposed sites.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Monitor for scale insects or aphids on young growth, though infestations are uncommon. Treat with horticultural oil if needed.

Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot in heavy soils. Mulch to retain soil moisture but keep mulch clear of the trunk to avoid fungal issues.
