Cupressus Stricta
Cupressus sempervirens Stricta is an architectural evergreen conifer commonly known as the Italian Cypress or Mediterranean Cypress. This upright cultivar stands tall with its narrow column of blue-green foliage, presenting a distinctive silhouette reminiscent of Mediterranean landscapes.
Originating from the eastern Mediterranean, this evergreen tree is not just about aesthetics. It's a testament to resilience, showcasing tolerance to coastal conditions, drought and wind. This makes it an excellent choice for planting in challenging environments where other trees might falter.
With a growth rate classified as medium, expect this tree to reach a height of 4m in just 5 years, maturing to an impressive 6m. Its slender form, with a width of just 1.5m, makes it perfect for tight areas or as a statement piece in larger landscapes. Occasional pruning will enhance its columnar shape, ensuring it remains a focal point in your garden for years to come.
Trimming: Trim your Cupressus stricta occasionally as required to maintain its narrow, columnar shape. The best time for trimming is late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead or damaged branches to promote healthy growth.
Fertilising: Fertilise in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers as they can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of root development.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase, usually the first year after planting. Once established, Cupressus stricta is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering, especially during prolonged dry periods.
Pest Control: Monitor for pests such as aphids, spider mites, and cypress tip moths. If infestations are detected, treat with appropriate insecticides or natural predators like ladybirds.
Disease Management: Watch for signs of cypress canker, a common disease that causes dieback of branches. Look for yellowing foliage and oozing lesions on the bark. If cypress canker is detected, prune out affected branches and apply a copper-based fungicide. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to help prevent disease.
