Cupressus sempervirens ‘Glauca’, also known as Pencil Pine, is a slow-growing, evergreen conifer with a slender, upright silhouette and aromatic blue-green foliage. Its fine, feathery texture and strong columnar habit make it ideal for vertical accents, whether planted singly, in pairs, or as part of an avenue.
Best suited to formal gardens, entrances, or large containers, it thrives in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Once established, it tolerates drought and light frosts but is not recommended for coastal exposure.
Expected to reach around 3 to 5 metres in height over 5 to 10 years, with a narrow footprint. If left untrimmed long term, it can grow taller over many decades, but it responds well to light pruning and is easily maintained at the desired height, making it a reliable choice for structured screening and vertical form.
Trimming: Light clipping may be done to maintain a formal shape. Avoid cutting into old wood as it may not regrow.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Container plants may benefit from an extra liquid feed during the growing season.
Watering: Water regularly during the first 1–2 years. Once established, water deeply during extended dry periods. Ensure soil is free-draining.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, but check for aphids or scale in dry conditions. Treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. Watch for cypress canker (dieback and resin on stems) and remove affected branches promptly.
