Cupressus Haggerston Grey
Cupressus Haggerston Grey is a tall, fast-growing evergreen conifer valued for its upright, columnar form and finely textured, grey-green foliage. With its strong vertical presence and year-round colour, it’s ideal for creating windbreaks, privacy screens, or as a striking specimen in larger gardens. Typically reaching 10-15 metres high and 2-3 metres wide, it lends structure and shelter to both rural and formal garden settings.
Thrives in full sun with well-draining soil and is tolerant of dry conditions, wind, and coastal exposure once established. Space plants 1.5-2.5 metres apart for screening. Minimal pruning required-light shaping can be done in late winter or early spring to maintain a tidy form if desired.
Trimming: Lightly trim in late spring or early autumn to shape and control size, particularly if used as a hedge or screen. Avoid cutting into old wood, as conifers like Cupressus may not reshoot from it.
Deadheading: Not applicable, as this conifer is grown for its striking grey-blue foliage and form, not for flowers.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. In poor soils, a second light feed in mid-summer may help maintain vigour.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods, especially in sandy soils.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, though cypress aphid may occur-signs include browning foliage and dieback. Prune out affected areas and treat early with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow and well-drained soil to prevent root rot and fungal issues such as cypress canker. Remove any affected branches promptly and avoid wounding the trunk or limbs.
