Chamaecyparis Southern Gold

Chamaecyparis 'Southern Gold' is a compact, evergreen conifer valued for its soft, feathery foliage in bright golden-yellow tones that hold their colour year-round. With a naturally conical shape and fine texture, it adds structure and a warm glow to garden borders, foundation plantings, or mixed conifer groupings. Growing to approximately 1.5-2 metres high and 1-1.2 metres wide, it suits formal, contemporary, and low-maintenance garden styles.

Plant in full sun to light shade with moist, free-draining soil. Best colour develops in full sun. Space plants 1-1.2 metres apart for hedging or grouped plantings. Tolerates light frost and moderate wind once established. Requires minimal pruning-light shaping in late winter or early spring is sufficient. Mulch annually to conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds. A reliable, easy-care choice for year-round colour and form.

Trimming: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain a neat, compact shape. Avoid cutting into old wood, as Chamaecyparis does not regenerate well from bare stems. Remove any dead or damaged branches as needed.

Deadheading: Not applicable, as this conifer is grown for its foliage, not flowers.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. Avoid overfeeding, especially in nutrient-rich soils.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Chamaecyparis ‘Southern Gold’ is relatively low-maintenance but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry spells. Prefers moist, well-drained soil.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free, but check for aphids or spider mites during hot, dry conditions. Treat infestations early with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if necessary.

Disease Management: Ensure good airflow and avoid waterlogged conditions to prevent root rot and fungal issues. Do not mulch heavily around the trunk-keep the base clear to prevent moisture build-up and rot. Remove any discoloured or dying foliage promptly.
