Vitis vinifera Purpurea

Vitis vinifera Purpurea is a vigorous deciduous climber that adds a touch of elegance to any garden. Emerging with green leaves in the spring, this ornamental grape vine undergoes a stunning transformation as the seasons change. The deeply lobed leaves gradually turn from grey-green to deep purple in the autumn, creating a mesmerising backdrop for the inedible dark purple fruit clusters. This climber thrives in well-drained soil and prefers sunny sites. It's frost-hardy and can tolerate short periods of dryness once established. With a maximum height of 8m and a spread of 2.5m, it's perfect for creating a natural screen or adding vertical interest to your outdoor space.

Not just a feast for the eyes, Vitis vinifera Purpurea is also low-maintenance. Any pruning should be done in winter to keep the plant in shape. Its leaves are white-downy when young, becoming claret red through summer, and deepening to rich dark purple in autumn. The vine produces small, airy, and feathery flowers that may be purplish or bronze, adding another layer of visual interest.
