Plumbago auriculata
Notify MePlumbago auriculata, commonly known as Cape plumbago or blue plumbago, is a striking flowering plant native to South Africa. This evergreen shrub showcases beautiful clusters of vibrant light-blue flowers abundantly from spring to autumn, attracting butterflies and other pollinators to the garden.
The plant features glossy green leaves and a spreading growth habit, reaching a height of about 2m with a similar spread. Plumbago auriculata is highly versatile and can be trained to climb on trellises, fences or walls, creating an enchanting vertical display.
It is also an excellent choice for borders, ground cover or as a container plant. Thriving in full sun or partial shade, this hardy shrub prefers well-drained soil and is drought-tolerant once established.
Trimming: Plumbago auriculata responds well to regular trimming to keep it tidy and encourage bushier growth. Lightly trim after flowering and remove any dead, damaged or straggly stems as needed. In warmer areas it can be cut back more firmly if it becomes overgrown.
Deadheading: Remove spent flower clusters regularly to encourage continued flowering and keep the plant looking neat. Snip off faded heads just above a healthy set of leaves.
Fertilising: Feed in spring and summer with a balanced fertiliser to support healthy growth and prolific flowering. Container-grown plants may benefit from more frequent feeding during the active growing season.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase to help develop a strong root system. Once established, Plumbago auriculata is reasonably tolerant of dry conditions, but it will perform better with watering during extended dry periods, especially when in flower.
Pest control: Watch for aphids, whitefly and spider mites, particularly on soft new growth or plants in sheltered positions. Inspect regularly and treat with insecticidal soap or another suitable control if needed.
Disease management: This plant is generally reliable, but overly damp conditions can lead to root rot or occasional fungal leaf problems. Look for yellowing leaves, wilting, or blackened or spotted foliage. Improve drainage, avoid overwatering, remove affected growth, and apply a suitable fungicide if necessary.
