Buxus microphylla, commonly known as Japanese Box, is a versatile, evergreen shrub with small, glossy green leaves and a naturally compact growth habit.
Its dense foliage clips neatly, making it an excellent choice for low hedges, topiary, or defined borders. Slower-growing than other Buxus species, it provides year-round form and structure with minimal maintenance. Ideal for shaping, edging paths, or planting in containers, it suits formal, courtyard, and contemporary gardens. Plant in full sun to part shade, in well-drained soil with moderate moisture. For hedging, space 30–40 cm apart for a tight, uniform line.
Mature size: Typically reaches around 1 metre high and wide, forming a dense, rounded shrub.
Trimming: Lightly trim in late spring to maintain its compact form. For hedging or topiary, additional trims in mid to late summer will encourage density and definition. Avoid trimming in late autumn to prevent frost-sensitive growth.
Deadheading: Not applicable, as Buxus is appreciated for its evergreen foliage, not flowering.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy, even growth. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers which may lead to soft, sappy growth.
Watering: Maintain consistent moisture during establishment and in dry periods. Ensure the soil drains well, particularly for plants in containers or heavier soils, to reduce risk of root rot.
Pest Control: Inspect regularly for Buxus psyllid and leafminer—distorted or cupped leaves may signal infestation. Treat early with horticultural oil or a systemic insecticide if needed.
Disease Management: Susceptible to Buxus blight and root rot. Key signs include leaf discolouration, defoliation, and stem lesions. Improve airflow, avoid overhead watering, and remove affected growth. Apply a fungicide if symptoms appear.
