Blueberry Legacy is a versatile, late-season blueberry valued for its exceptionally sweet flavour and extended harvest window, with fruit ripening from late Summer into early Autumn. It produces firm, medium to large berries and features semi-evergreen foliage in milder climates, offering year-round structure. Spring flowering and Autumn colour add ornamental appeal.
An excellent choice for home orchards, mixed borders, or edible landscaping, it fits well into lifestyle block, cottage, and modern garden styles.
Plant in full sun with acidic, free-draining soil. Keep soil evenly moist, particularly during flowering and fruiting. Space plants 1.2–1.5m apart to allow for airflow and productive growth.
Mature size: Upright and bushy, reaching approximately 1.5–2m tall and 1.2–1.5m wide.
Trimming: Prune in late winter to early spring while dormant. Remove any dead, weak, or inward-growing branches to maintain an open, upright shape. For mature plants, rejuvenate by cutting back up to a third of the oldest canes at ground level to encourage vigorous new growth.
Deadheading: Not required, but clear away any unharvested or shrivelled berries post-fruiting to keep the plant tidy and reduce disease risk.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a fertiliser suitable for acid-loving plants (e.g., camellias or rhododendrons). Apply a second, lighter feed in late summer if needed. Avoid using lime or alkaline fertilisers, which can disrupt soil pH.
Watering: Maintain consistent moisture, especially during establishment and dry spells. ‘Legacy’ is known for extended fruiting, so regular watering is important throughout the season. Apply acidic mulch such as pine bark to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Pest Control: Generally low in pests, but fruit may attract birds—netting is recommended during ripening. Monitor for aphids or scale insects on new growth; treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if necessary.
Disease Management: Ensure free-draining, acidic soil to prevent root rot. Watch for powdery mildew in humid weather—look for a white film on leaves and treat with a sulphur-based fungicide. Promote airflow through regular pruning and proper spacing.
