Blechnum fluviatile

Blechnum fluviatile, commonly known as kiokio or creek fern, is a compact New Zealand native fern prized for its neat, low-growing rosette form. Its leathery, dark green fronds are slightly arching and often flushed with bronze when young, creating a fine-textured ground layer in shaded, damp environments.

Ideal for native, woodland, and rainforest gardens, it works well as understorey planting or along stream edges and shaded pathways.

Thrives in partial to full shade with consistently moist, well-draining soil rich in organic matter. Protect from drying winds and allow leaf litter to build naturally. Space 40–60 cm apart for ground coverage.

Mature size reaches 30–50 cm tall with a dense, tidy spread of up to 60 cm.

Trimming: Minimal maintenance required. Remove old, damaged, or dead fronds at the base to tidy the plant and encourage fresh growth. Avoid cutting healthy fronds, as they are important for photosynthesis and overall plant health.

Deadheading: Not applicable.

Fertilising: Generally low-maintenance in nutrient-rich soils. In poorer soils, apply a light dressing of balanced, slow-release fertiliser or leaf mould in early spring to support growth.

Watering: Prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil. Water during dry periods, especially in the establishment phase. Mulching helps retain moisture and maintain the cool, damp conditions it favours.

Pest Control: Typically pest-free. Occasionally, slugs or snails may target young fronds—manage with organic slug control methods if necessary.

Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot. Remove any decaying fronds to keep the crown healthy and reduce the risk of fungal issues.
